Life Today

These days Angie seems to do more things and go more places than I do. For example, most days she goes to the Adult Day Program created by St. Joseph Home (Unless she has to work as a greeter at the front desk). This program is so important to the residents’ well being, because it gives them a place to go every day. Once they get there they see different people and sometimes they even get to see a play. For example, this past week the Ensemble Theater Group visited and performed.  In addition, everybody gets to go on an outing at least once a month. This month Angie and her roommate will be going to see the Cirque du Soleil.

Volunteers come in almost weekly from different schools and sing karaoke or do other activities with residents.  And there are parties to celebrate the seasons and birthdays. This month there is a Christmas party. There is always something fun to look forward to. How important is that?"

Dream Team

One of things Angie has to look forward to is her dream team monthly meetings. The way I understand it is that it’s a get together of a group of people who are all using Speech- Generating Devices (SVG). I have heard about this from her speech therapist, but have never had the opportunity to be a silent observer, since I live far away.  It is my goal this year to be in Cincinnati on the day of one of her meetings. Meanwhile I have asked the therapist from the Cincinnati Perlman Center at Children’s (an organization that helps children and adults with cerebral palsy and other physical challenges live a full life) to help me understand and explain exactly what these meetings are and how they are organized.
