SPECIAL NEEDS, SPECIAL LIFE

Welcome to a mom's blog about life with her special needs daughter, Angela Maria. This is a unique blog for you to explore and hopefully gain insights into living with and caring for a child whose needs go way beyond normal. My name is Carol and I'm ready to share our story of 43 plus years in the hope that it will help you.

Angie's life story is really a huge part of my own story and through the experience of caring for her, I have gained a much better understanding and greater insight into how to live joyfully and happily in the moment while at the same time coping with a great number of challenges. I'm delighted to have found a platform where I can post my story and share my passions, thoughts and experiences with you, my loyal readers. I'm writing this blog with the help and support of my sons and family. Read on, and enjoy. Feel free to ask question too.

The Cirque du Soleil Experience

Over the holidays my son Matt organized and took us on an outing to see the Cirque du Soleil performance of Crystal. Not only did he include Angie and me, but he also invited her roommate Millie, plus included an aide from St. Joseph Home who also acted as our driver. The show was absolutely amazing and we had a great time.  What’s more, it was perfect for Angie and Millie. The US Bank Arena in Cincinnati has accommodations for wheelchairs, and even though we were rather far away it was a visual extravaganza thanks to the

creative and colorful lighting.  The ice rink appeared to be the sea at times, then ice, a ballroom, an office and even to a hockey rink. The visual effects, the music and the acrobatics on ice were fantastic and unimaginable and certainly kept Angie and Millie engaged. All in all, it was the perfect outing and St. Joseph Home made it possible.

When we want to take Angie with us to a movie or family event, St. Joseph Home provides the van and the driver. Of course, we have to plan ahead to get on the calendar, but knowing we can take her places like the zoo, or our family reunion is wonderful. The administration believes that the residents’ and their family’s well-being is more than just great personal care. It takes into consideration the whole person and their family. This service eliminates the need for families to keep their own lift van and for this, I am extremely grateful. This program is another reason I personally believe that Angie lives in a model facility for people with severe disabilities who need total care. We know we are very blessed to have Angie living in such a fantastic home.
